Today there are so many choices when it comes to choosing where to have your child’s birthday party- often it’s easy to overlook your own backyard. Backyard birthdays work well in the warmer months and for younger children, a fenced area is necessary. Birthday parties at home are often less expensive than taking a group of kids to a hosted party or children’s centre. With a little bit of imagination, creativity and a theme, a backyard party can be a huge hit.
Throw a barnyard bash
Throw a happening hoedown for your child by planning a themed barnyard, backyard birthday party. If you happen to have a shed or gazebo in your backyard you can decorate it to look like a barn. Put checkered table cloths on the tables, use bales of hay as chairs and tie up some stocks of corn as centre pieces.
To add to the theme have hamburgers, cobs of corn and milk for lunch. This is a good way to get kids to eat their vegetables.
Have the children dress up as farmers or animals. Play games like pin the tail on the pig, horseshoes, bowling with milk bottles and bobbing for apples. Have the children plant a small tree or vegetable in their very own pot to take home with them.
If you have any tricycles, wagons or outdoor riding vehicles turn them into tractors pulling bales of hay or crops on the farm. The children will enjoy riding around on them.
If you want to hire entertainment, look for a traveling petting zoo or, for do-it-yourself effects, make a CD compilation of songs like Old MacDonald, the farmer and the dell, country songs or animal noises.
As a goody bag, give the children a pail, shovel, some plastic farm animals and animal shaped candy. All of this can be found at your local dollar store.
Throw a big-top adventure
If you have a gazebo in your backyard, you can make it look like a big-top tent by putting a big sheet overtop of it and securing the ends with rope to the ground. Use bright coloured balloons to decorate the area. As a main attraction you can dress your family pet up as a wild animal. Your dog could be a ferocious lion or your cat could be a wild cat or tiger.
Games could include ring toss and pond fishing where they win candies disguised as animal food. You can hold a talent show where the kids are the circus act. As a bonus you can have a family friend dress up as a clown and make balloon animals or, hire a magician to perform some magic.
Serve circus foods such as candy apples, cotton candy, popcorn and fun snacks. Lunch should be hotdogs, pogos and pop.
Party at the beach
Bring the sunshine and sand to your own backyard by having a beach party themed event. Make sure to have a pool you can fill up with water and a sandbox to help create the real thing. Use vacation decor such as blow up palm trees, beach chairs, beach towels for tanning, beach balls, sea shells and small tables with umbrellas.
You can serve lemonade with limes, cherries or small umbrellas on the side for a cooling effect. Have the kids participate in a scavenger hunt by hiding small trinkets and treasures in the sand or around the backyard. Some other activities could be dancing in the sand, hula-hoop contests or volleyball. And of course, remember to play some summer music or songs from the beach boys.

No matter what time of year it is, a gazebo is a classic and wonderful attraction to any garden. Whether you use your gazebo an entertaining area, a private reading room, a yoga sanctuary or just a place to get away, a few simple ideas can turn your gazebo into a dreamy, backyard get away.
idea #1: Add some hanging plants to the archways of your gazebo. This simple element will add colour and life to your gazebo, as well as enhance extra privacy. For even more privacy, consider planting annual vines. These vines actually grow pretty quickly and can be encouraged to grow into empty spaces or up around your gazebo frame.
Idea #2: Adding a humming bird feeder, a bird bath or a bird house to your gazebo can not only beautify your space but turn your gazebo into a great bird watching area.
Idea #3: Water fountains create a calming and relaxing atmosphere for almost any backyard space. No matter where you put them, it is always nice to hear the water flowing from one end to the other. The great thing about fountains is that they can be custom built by a landscape and stone company or you can buy one prebuilt. They come in many shapes and sizes. A nice place to put a fountain is near a walkway or in a place you can see it from your gazebo.
Idea #4: Create a romantic and well lit area with solar powered garden lamps, hanging candles or creatively strung Christmas lights. Outdoor lighting is limitless and makes a world of difference, especially on a warm summer evening.
Idea #5: A set of wind chimes are always nice touch to any backyard. You can hang them in the archway of your gazebo or in the entry way. Either way the wind in the chimes leaves a nice ring that sooths the mind.

Any gazebo space can be made to come alive at night with some fancy gazebo illumination! Not only that but you’ll be able to see your burgers burning on the grill 10 feet away and, see your companies faces only a chair away. Wouldn’t that be nice!
Gazebo lighting can be anything, from a string of lightbulbs draped around the gazebo, to a lantern to some candles. Of couse we all know the dangers of a lit flame burning inside a gazebo but, with proper precautions it can be done safely and effectively.
Of course the best choice in lighting is what suits your budget, your needs and enhances the space around you. There are many different styles of lighting today- different shapes, sizes, etc.
In general, most gazebo owners choose to opt into a general lighting, low-voltage lighting system. Low-voltage lights are safe, inexpensive, easy to install, and cosume less energy- which means energy and money savings for you.
Another great place to install lights in anywhere there are paths or walkways, danger zones like a pond or high traffic areas of your yard such as, the BBQ and table area.
If your not sure what kind of lights would best suit your gazebo or yard just ask the installer for their oppinion. They have seen it all before and would probably be happy to give you some ideas.

Another gazebo I see regularly, is the 24 sided Octagon Gazebo I drive past to and from work everyday! This gazebo is huge. It is the size of a bedroom in a house.
The people that own this gazebo, own about 6 acres of land. Their gazebo is in the front of their house, where the land extends out about 2 acres. So about 150 feet from their door, they have their gazebo setting. About 100 feet in front of that is a large group of outdoor chairs with a fire set up in the middle. Then about 100 feet in front of that is a huge pond, that almost tripples the size of the gazebo.
The pond is beautiful, it has nice clear water, rocks shaped all around the edges and a few remote control boats setting-sea in the water. This is the ultimate yard. And not to mention, they have a custom built swing set for the kids.
One night I drove past and saw the fire buning nicely, with people sitting all around it. I saw a few boys racing the boats in the pond underneith the light of a lamp they had set up. And there was about 10 people sitting inside the gazebo, having a few drinks, and playing cards in the brightly lit room.
I thought, what a great evening atmosphere for a get together! Many times if a party is outside because there are only so many things to do, like talk with people, etc. once they get done with chit- chating you find they are leaving.
With this situation, it gave the people options. If it is breezy out, and it was that night, they had the option of going ito the gazebo. And better yet they set up a card table and didnt have to worry about the cards blowing away, or having to go inside because it’s getting too dark.
Additionally, the pond and the fire allowed the guests to choose a array of events to entertain themselves and not be bound to one place or situation for the night.
On a nice summer night, it is great to be outside, getting fresh air with your guests while still having the option of going into the gazebo and not having to do everything inside the house.

I went to Tim Hortons today, to grab a coffee. And on my out, the next street over, is a old age community home. It is a large bright white home, with lots of greenery, plants and flowers. The sun seems to just shine on this community living centre; when you pass it, you can’t help but notice it. And on the right hand side of the fresh, healthy, green grass is a large, wooden, beautiful gazebo.
Once or twice before, I have driven by the centre, but no one was in the gazebo. But today, there was a small goup of elderly people, I’d say about 5-6 people in the gazebo, drinking tea and chatting. They seemed to be dressed quite nice too. The ladies were wearing light floral blouses with collars, cotton coloured shorts, and had nicely done hair. I think one of the ladies was wearing a string of pearls around her neck as well.
The men had on their nice golf shirts or light dress shirts, with shorts or slacks and of course their hair was combed nicely to the side. Additionally, I saw a few watches on the wrists of the men.
They seemed to be having such an enjoyable time in this gazebo, I really wanted to be in there with them. As they drank their tea and ate some sort of ordurves, I saw them laughing, talking and touching each other is a joking kind of way. It seemed that one of the men said some sort of sarcastic remark to one of the women, so she got up and slapped him on the arm, completely grinning from ear to ear.
I couldnt help but wonder, that maybe this setting and atmosphere of the wooden gazebo was enlightening their time together. I mean, they had a nice place to sit in the warm weather, while still being lightly shaded by parts of the covering gazebo. It seemed so easy for them out there. It seemed like such a good time. Although they were “old” they appared to be a young and free as children.
Although the old age home looks fresh and bright, as I said in the beginning, I think I assumed that the people inside would not be as fresh and bright. I pictured them to have no smiles, and be a little unkept, or at least not as well kept as they appeared. It looked like they had planned a nice day in the sun, in the gazebo, to drink tea, and have a good time with old friends. It looked like a situation that had been planned for weeks, even months.
I was happy to have witnessed this good time! And to think, the road sign read 40 kilometers an hour, so driving 40 kilometers an hour I saw all of this within about 6 seconds. Can you imagine what I would have saw if I was walking by, or if I stopped by to say hello.

How exciting would a Gazebo Newsletter be everyone?
“Very exciting” you say!!
Well…. that is the response we have had so far!
People (people that view our website) are really looking forward to a potentially up-and-coming “Gazebo Newsletter”, containing News, tips, gazebo information, company growth, promotions and more.
So based on our viewers request we have a discussion going on about building a newsletter template to fill mothly or quarterly (we are not sure yet) to send out to those interested gazebo lovers. A great idea too might be to have a forward button right on the newsletter allowing the reader to forward it to friends, family and those interested. This could be a hit as someone always knows someone who knows someone who wants a gazebo! And why wouldn’t you? Well…you would! So the right question actually is Why would you -want a gazebo? There are so many answers…so you tell me!!

beautify your yard by adding a gazebo. These outside structures add charm and dignity to any outdoor living space. They are decorative shelter for your backyard. Have it be you want a gazebo to accomidate the family in a summer BBQ, go ahead! Have it be you would like to spend an evening away from the family hiding in the gazebo, go ahead! It’s a great home away from home entity.
A vinyl gazebo in particular is easy to clean and will withstand a characterized winter with gusty winds, snow and foul play. This marvelous structure will keep you away from snows harm and cold.
Now, speaking of putting this unit together, I have just the instructions for you:
First of all, find a level area of ground in which you want to be the foundation for the foundation of your gazebo. We dont want you slant eyed or cock eyed while siting in your gazebo talking to a friend. Save that for when your drinking with friends in he gazebo, which Im sure there will be plenty of.
2nd- Place the floor sections for the vinyl gazebo on the level pad. Put the floor boards together in the middle of the pad.
Put the posts in their holes in the floor of the gazebo. Match the corners carefully and make all the pieces in the floor flush. Fasten the posts in their brackets with floor bolts and attach a metal post plate to the top of the posts.
Set up the top railing sections against the bottom of the gazebo posts in the proper order. Ensure the decorative wider section, or door header, is at the door opening. Center railing sections on the posts and use a partner to hoist the railings to the top for attachment. Start with the door header and work your way around the gazebo, screwing the railing pieces in place. The rails align to each post with pre-drilled holes.
Add the bottom railing sections, with the hole in the bottom lined up to the bottom hole in the posts. The hole in the top of the railing lines up with the hole in the middle of the posts. Attach these bottom rail pieces with screws through the holes.
Slide the vinyl gazebo’s roof sections to the top of the posts and align each section with the middle of the corresponding post. Hold each piece in place with clamps. Ensure the edge of the roof is even all around the gazebo. Place screws through the metal plate on the post into the roof section. Add the remaining sections and hold them together with clamps. Put bolts into the adjoining roof sections and hand tighten.
Line up the corners of the roof. Press up in the middle of the gazebo roof to help align the sections, and then tighten the bolts with a wrench.
Ta da!! You got it! How does it look?
If it’s not looking so heathy, which it should because it is quite simple for a regular handy man, then give us a call at Country Side Gazebos of America and we can help you out with some advise.
